Immunotherapy has emerged as an additional, powerful tool to treat head and neck cancers. The role of immunotherapy is ever evolving and is now standard of care for advanced unresectable and metastatic disease. Additionally, it is an emerging standard in the definitive setting for locoregionally advanced resectable disease. This session aims to review the rapidly changing landscape of immuno-oncology and how it affects patients that will be seen in the practices of oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to describe the components of the immune system and current strategies to harness it for treating cancer.
  2. Describe indications for immunotherapy checkpoint inhibitors in treating head and neck cancer.
  3. Describe common side effects of immunotherapy.
