Several surgical techniques are employed to vertically reconstruct atrophic alveolar bone. However, these ancillary techniques have higher morbidity and are technique sensitive, prone to more complications with less experienced surgeons. The use of short implants is an alternative to adequately restore partially edentulous patients, and its use has grown exponentially over the last years due to great improvements on materials and techniques. Recently, ultra-short implants have been introduced, showing promising results for the rehabilitation of patients with severely resorbed alveolar ridges. This presentation will review indications, risks and benefits of the existing surgical alternatives to rehabilitate the atrophic posterior mandible with bone augmentation and implants.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
List main surgical techniques utilized to vertically augment the posterior mandible.
Describe characteristics of short and ultra-short implants.
Select clinical indications where the use of grafting or short implants may be advantageous.
