GS03 - Advancing Outpatient Anesthesia: CRNA Integration and New Drug Strategies

Integrating a CRNA into an office-based practice offers a model for expanding anesthesia capabilities while enhancing patient care, surgical efficiency and overall practice outcomes. This session will review patient-selection criteria for OMS-administered IV sedation, in-office general anesthesia with a CRNA and hospital-based general anesthesia. One-year outcome data – including patient demographics and procedures performed – will be reviewed. The program also will address the legal and regulatory parameters and the finances of adding another anesthesia provider. Discussions include the use of dexmedetomidine, remimazolam and a propofol pump with an emphasis on pharmacology, dosing and complications associated with these medications.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe the benefits of implementing a CRNA-integrated anesthesia model in an outpatient practice.
  2. Demonstrate the decision-making process for selecting surgeon-directed IV sedation (single operator model), in-office general anesthesia with a CRNA or hospital-based care.
  3. Describe the use of dexmedetomidine, remimazolam and a propofol pump in outpatient anesthesia.
