The purpose of this interactive session is to establish a two-way conversation between the JOMS leadership team and AAOMS members whose primary professional activity is private practice.
The speakers will review recent efforts to make JOMS more relevant, accessible, and useful to practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeons, dispelling the myth that JOMS is a strictly academic journal. They will describe practical opportunities for members to engage with the Journal, including reading and discussing JOMS content, applying published findings in clinical practice, sharing articles with colleagues and staff, sharing clinical experiences and personal innovations in JOMS, serving as peer reviewers, and participating on the Editorial Board.
A substantial portion of the session will be devoted to hearing directly from private practicing OMS surgeons. Participants will be invited to discuss the clinical information they value most, the barriers that prevent them from engaging with the Journal, and the changes that would make JOMS a more useful resource in their daily practices.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Recognize recent JOMS initiatives designed to make the Journal more relevant, accessible, and useful to all AAOMS members.
  2. Identify opportunities for oral and maxillofacial surgeons in private practice to engage with JOMS as readers, commentators, authors, reviewers and Editorial Board members.
  3. Overcome barriers that limit private practicing members’ engagement with JOMS and view JOMS as a valuable partner in practice.
