Dr. Marc M. Serra is a distinguished leader in military medicine, currently serving as the Consultant to the Surgeon General for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In this high-level advisory role, he provides expert guidance on surgical policy, readiness, and clinical leadership across the U.S. Army. Concurrently, he serves as the Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center, where he oversees complex surgical operations and departmental clinical excellence.
Prior to his current appointments, Dr. Serra served as the Program Director for the OMS Residency at Madigan from 2019 until July 2024, a tenure marked by a rigorous commitment to the education and mentorship of the next generation of military surgeons.
His academic and clinical foundations are uniquely multifaceted. He earned a BA in Theater and Dance from Santa Clara University, instilling a disciplined and communicative approach that remains a hallmark of his leadership style. He completed his clinical training at Columbia University’s School of Dental and Oral Surgery, followed by an OMS residency at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. To achieve advanced mastery of the specialty, he completed a maxillofacial cosmetics and reconstruction fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. John Griffin in Columbus, Mississippi.
A board-certified surgeon and dedicated military officert, Dr. Serra resides in the Tacoma area with his wife, Renee—a fellow Army Officer and Otolaryngologist—and their two daughters, Catherine and Evelina.
