Dr. John Schaefer received his medical and engineering degree from West Virginia University. He is board certified in Anesthesiology and recently retired from clinical practice at the Medical University of South Carolina were he was a tenured Professor.

Dr. Schaefer came to South Carolina from the University of Pittsburgh where he helped establish the WISER Institute and served as it’s first Director from 1997-2006. In South Carolina as a SmartState Endowed Chair, he led the effort to establish a statewide network of 15 simulation programs including universities, Technical Colleges and health systems that performed over 80,000 simulations annually.

Dr. John Schaefer is an international expert in healthcare simulation who transformed the way healthcare clinicians are taught, and the process, to reduce patient injury and improve medical outcomes. He has a number of simulation patents and software copyrights found in over half of the manikin-based simulator used today. He has co-authored hundreds of simulation educational learning systems and scenarios. His career has been focused on making the field of simulation broadly available to healthcare educators with measurable value and lower costs. In 2015 he received from the SSIH a citation for “Innovation & Collaboration” and in 2016 was invited to be a founding Fellow in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Academy and in 2019 was made a honary fellow of the American Association of Oral-maxillofacial Surgeons.
