The edentulous maxilla presents several clinical challenges for dental implant rehabilitation, from lower bone quality and quantity compared to the mandible to multiple critical anatomical structures in the surrounding areas of the facial skeleton.

The zygomatic implant was developed to address these specific issues. It has been an effective option in the management of the severely atrophic edentulous maxilla as well as for maxillectomy defects. This course aims to provide the practitioners with a comprehensive case-driven overview on the placement of zygoma implants that includes presurgical planning, review of different implant systems, step-by-step surgical procedures and restorative protocols as well as complications and their management.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Review the anatomy and physiology of the zygomatic bone and adjacent structures.
  2. Recognize indications and contraindications for zygomatic implants.
  3. Identify patients who are suitable for zygomatic implants and develop a comprehensive surgical and prosthetic treatment plan.
  4. Demonstrate the different surgical techniques for zygomatic implant placement.
  5. Discuss the different zygomatic implant systems available and their characteristics.
  6. Explain the restorative options and considerations for zygomatic implants.
  7. Discuss the importance of postoperative care and long-term follow-up for zygomatic implant patients.
  8. Recognize how to prevent and manage adverse outcomes.
  9. Develop critical thinking skills and treatment planning strategies for complex zygomatic implant cases.
  10. Gain practical experience through hands-on training and simulated patient exercises.
