Reconstruction for pediatric patients with hemifacial microsomia has presented many distinct challenges, not the least of which is microtia reconstruction. Proper diagnosis and management allow these patients to regain function and can provide significant psychological benefits after surgery. The surgery has long relied on harvesting three ribs at approximately 12 years of age for reconstruction. New techniques and updated prosthetics and grafting products have allowed for earlier treatment and resulted in an earlier return of function and cosmesis for the growing patient. This session will address a team approach to the management of patients with microtia, including diagnosis, combined surgical approaches with ENT and other specialties, and surgical options including craniofacial implants, autologous cartilage harvest, fresh frozen cadaveric cartilage and preformed implant placement.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
  1. Review OMENS classification and microtia grading and how they relate to surgical intervention.
  2. Understand how microtia and hearing are related and the associated treatment. Discuss surgical and non-surgical management of hearing loss in this population.
  3. Compare the different options for implants and biological graft materials for microtia reconstruction.
  4. Describe and compare single-stage surgical reconstruction versus multiple-stage reconstruction in microtia patients.
