Attending Surgeon, Program Director VCU School of Dentistry Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Richmond, Virginia
Conducting emergency simulations within the oral and maxillofacial surgery setting is imperative for enhancing resident education and establishing the legitimacy of the OMS practice model. The presenters advocate for a standardized, reproducible simulation model, as implemented by the OMS residency program at Virginia Commonwealth University. This training model aims to enhance resident competency and promote widespread adoption of team-based simulation through a robust, scalable educational intervention adaptable across institutions. Developing emergency simulation training enhances resident preparedness for frequently encountered OMS emergencies, reinforces the rigor of the solo-provider anesthesia model and supports national efforts towards training standardization. This session aims to teach programs how to implement this high-yield educational strategy into their curriculum.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Understand standards of simulations.
Build a simulation curriculum that fits their educational objectives.
Understand the larger implications of anesthesia simulation training in residency education.
