SS18 - Maxillomandibular Fixation: Why, What, When and Where

This session will explore the various forms of maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) with a focus on clinical decision-making based on fracture type. MMF remains a fundamental technique in the management of maxillofacial trauma, yet the choice of method can vary significantly depending on clinical circumstances and surgeon preference. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a structured and practical framework to guide clinicians in answering four key questions: Why choose a particular form of MMF, when it is indicated, where it is most appropriately applied, and how to implement it safely and effectively.

The central theme will be tailoring fixation strategies to the specific characteristics of mandibular and maxillary fractures, with additional consideration given to patient factors, surgical goals and resource availability. Differences in cost, safety profiles, operative time and postoperative management will be examined across techniques. Case-based examples will be used to highlight best practices and common pitfalls. By the end of the session, attendees will have a clearer understanding of the indications and contraindications for each MMF method and will be better equipped to make evidence-based, patient-centered decisions in the treatment of facial fractures.
