Dr. Carl A. Labella, III, Colonel (ret) served as the Chair/Program Director of the San Antonio Military Tri-Service Oral & Maxillofacial Residency Program (SAM OMS) and OMS Commander, Joint Base San Antonio – Lackland Air Force Base, Texas for 8 years. Col Labella's work encompasses an integrated tri-service amalgamation of the largest post graduate residency training program supporting both the DOD, a civilian Level-1 Trauma Center, and it affiliations Wilford Hall Ambulatory Medical Clinic, Brooke Army Medical Center and University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston. Concurrently, Dr Labella served as the specialty Consultant of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to the US Air Force and office of the Surgeon General.
Dr. Labella received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from University of Tennessee, Memphis in 2001, and he went on to complete an AEGD-1 in 2002 at Keesler Air Force Base. After tours at Columbus AFB, MS and Aviano AB, Italy serving as an Advanced Clinical Dentist and the Clinical Flight Commander, he then went on to complete his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in 2012 from the SAM OMS Residency Program in San Antonio, TX.
Dr. Labella was commissioned in the United States Air Force in 1997 as a Second Lieutenant as he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry, Psychology, and Aerospace Studies from Delta State University where he completed ROTC. Throughout his career, he has served in a variety of clinical and leadership positions to include Flight Commander positions, Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Joint Base Andrews, MD, staff Oral Surgeon in support of AEGD-1 Anacostia-Bolling/Andrews AEGD-1 and Walter Reed National Capitol Consortium Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program. He is a Fellow Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, and Fellow of Americam College of Dentistry. He has been a Delegate to the AAOMS House of Delegates serving in his numerous years and serves as an ABOMS Board Examiner. He also serves as a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) inspector for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Programs across the United States. Dr Labella currently works in corporate practice in San Antonio as serves as volunteer staff for Joint Base San Antonio Military Residency and University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio OMS Residency Program.
