John M. Sands was born and raised in Los Gatos, a small town in the heart of Silicon Valley, California. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, followed by his Medical Degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He went on to complete his general surgery training at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He now serves as an attending surgeon at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, where his scope of practice includes orthognathic surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, temporomandibular joint disorders, head and neck pathology, facial trauma, and dentoalveolar surgery.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Sands enjoys exploring the outdoors with his wife, Abby, and their two children, Jude and Quinn. A lifelong entrepreneur, he launched AROMS (Advancing Resources of OMS) in 2022—the first comprehensive digital platform for OMFS education—now serving more nearly 10,000 physicians across 75 countries. Through AROMS and his clinical work, Dr. Sands remains deeply dedicated to growing, modernizing, and advancing the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
