The pathology report is a cornerstone of surgical decision-making, yet its clinical impact often extends far beyond the single diagnostic line. For oral and maxillofacial surgeons, understanding the nuances embedded within these reports is critical to optimizing patient outcomes. Elements such as histopathologic descriptors, margin status, grading, staging and even the language used by pathologists can significantly influence surgical planning, risk assessment and long-term management strategies.
This 50-minute presentation will explore how to effectively interpret and translate pathology reports into actionable clinical practice. Using real-world examples, speakers will discuss common pitfalls in relying solely on the "final diagnosis," highlight the importance of correlating histopathology with clinical and radiographic findings and emphasize how subtle details in a report may alter operative approaches or follow-up protocols. Attention also will be given to strategies for fostering stronger communication between surgeons and pathologists, with the goal of creating a more collaborative diagnostic-to-treatment continuum.
By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with practical tools to "read between the lines" of pathology reports, allowing them to make more informed clinical decisions and deliver a higher level of personalized care to their patients.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Interpret pathology reports beyond the diagnostic line by identifying key histopathologic descriptors, margin status, grading and staging elements that influence surgical decision-making.
Correlate pathology findings with clinical and radiographic data to optimize surgical planning, risk assessment and long-term patient management.
Enhance communication and collaboration with pathologists to improve diagnostic accuracy, clarify ambiguous findings and strengthen the continuity of care from diagnosis to treatment.
